Embrace the Midsummer Magic in Your Wedding

Hello, lovely couples! As a wedding planner, I’m always inspired by traditions that bring people together, and in Sweden, few are more magical than Midsummer. If you’re dreaming of a celebration filled with beauty, connection, and a hint of folklore, this joyful holiday is the perfect muse.

What is Midsummer, Really?

Midsummer (Midsommar in Swedish) is one of the most celebrated holidays in Sweden. Rooted in both pagan and Christian traditions, it originally marked the summer solstice and the height of the growing season.

Today, it’s a joyful mix of wildflower crowns, dancing around the maypole, and long, light-filled evenings spent with loved ones. It’s also full of charming folklore and old superstitions, from flower magic to quiet rituals that promise a glimpse into the future.

Magical Midsummer Wedding Ideas

If you’re planning a summer wedding in Sweden, here are some playful, beautiful ways to bring that Midsummer spirit into your celebration:

1. Floral Crowns & Wild Bouquets

Wearing a flower crown on Midsummer is a must, and a dreamy bridal look too. Whether for the bride, bridesmaids, or even your guests, floral crowns made of fresh, local blooms bring softness and tradition to your wedding style.

Tip: Host a crown-making workshop during your bridal shower or welcome dinner for a creative and meaningful guest activity.

2. A Midsummer Pole for Dancing & Photos

The midsommarstång, or maypole, is a joyful symbol of the season. Beautifully decorated with greenery and flowers, it’s perfect as a photo backdrop or as a fun activity to get your guests moving after the ceremony. Dont forget to dance the frog song, små grodorna.

3. A Scandinavian-Inspired Menu

Food is at the heart of Midsummer. Think pickled herring, potatoes with dill, gravlax, and of course, the classic strawberry cake.

Tip: Serve Scandinavian canapés at cocktail hour or surprise your guests with a Swedish dessert table alongside your wedding cake.

4. Folk Games & Music

Midsummer is about laughter and play. From sack races to tug-of-war and Swedish folk songs, these lighthearted traditions add charm and connection to your wedding day.

Tip: Include a few traditional games or hire a folk band to teach your guests a dance or two. Trust us, the energy is unforgettable!

5. Light & Nature-Inspired Decor

Channel the magic of Swedish summer nights with soft lighting, greenery, and natural textures. Fairy lights, lanterns, and birch wood details pair beautifully with outdoor venues or rustic spaces.

6. A Sunset or Late-Night Ceremony

Midsummer evenings stretch late into the night, especially in northern Sweden. Consider hosting a twilight ceremony or an outdoor reception that flows from golden hour into candlelit celebration.

7. Folklore Touches & Superstitions

Let Swedish folklore add a whimsical layer to your day:

  • Place seven types of flowers under your pillow the night before, tradition says you’ll dream of your future partner.

  • Collect herbs in silence on Midsummer Eve for their healing powers.

  • Or simply invite the spirit of Midsummer magic by incorporating these stories into your vows, stationery, or ceremony.
